In these situations, protecting the printed surface is only one part of the job.

Oil, grease, moisture, and food residue can interfere with the bond between the label and the packaging surface. If the package becomes contaminated before labeling, even a strong adhesive may struggle to make proper contact.
The adhesive also needs to match the container material.
A glass cooking oil bottle, a PET salad dressing bottle, a PP seasoning container, and a flexible plastic pouch do not have the same surface characteristics.
For this reason, adhesive selection may depend on:

These products may all need grease-resistant labels, but they do not necessarily need the same construction.
- A cooking oil bottle may need BOPP, lamination, and an adhesive suitable for the bottle material.
- A refrigerated sauce bottle may need oil resistance, moisture resistance, and an adhesive that performs in cold conditions.
- A takeaway container may require stronger protection against grease, heat, and short-term handling.
- A flexible food pouch may need a thinner and more flexible label material that moves with the packaging.

Those details determine the recommendation.
An Oil-Resistant Food Label Usually Needs More Than Oil Resistance
In real use, oil-resistant food labels usually need to withstand more than oil.
They may also experience:
- Water

- Rubbing during transportation
- Cleaning chemicals
- Frequent handling
A label that resists oil but scratches easily may still lose important printed information.
A label that keeps the artwork clean but begins peeling at the edges is also not a successful solution.

The lamination or coating needs to be compatible with the printed material.
The production process needs to prevent problems such as:

- Barcode damage
- Blurred product information
- Delamination
- Surface scratching
For food labels containing barcodes, nutrition facts, ingredient information, or batch details, print durability is especially important.
The label must remain readable even after the package has been handled repeatedly.

When a customer says, “I need an oil-proof label,” adding lamination may be the right first response.
But a responsible label supplier should continue asking questions.
- What kind of food is inside the package?
- How much oil or grease will the label contact?
- What material is the container made from?
- Will the product be refrigerated?
- How will the package be transported and handled?
- Will the label be applied by hand or by machine?
