Can Ordering More Supplement Label SKUs Together Reduce Printing Costs

Producing multiple supplement label SKUs together can reduce setup and cutting costs when size, material, and finishing requirements are compatible.

When a brand launches a new product, every part of the project has a budget.
Manufacturing, ingredients, marketing, shipping, and packaging all need to fit within that budget.
Sometimes the product itself is ready to move forward, but the total packaging cost ends up higher than expected.
That is exactly what happened with a customer we spoke with recently.

A Customer Told Us the Project Was Over Budget

Last week, a U.S. customer contacted us about a batch of custom labels.
After we sent the quotation, the conversation stopped.
Out of curiosity and as part of normal follow-up, I called the customer.
He immediately remembered which label supplier I was calling from.
During the call, he explained that the whole project had gone far over budget, and they were still trying to figure out where they could reduce costs.
I told him that we might be able to help with some packaging cost-saving ideas.
After the call, I sent him a more detailed suggestion.
He was very open to it because they were looking for anything that could help move the project forward.

Why Multiple Supplement SKUs Changed the Cost Structure

I noticed that the customer's company was a private label supplement manufacturer.
That meant they were not only producing one supplement product for one brand.
They were helping supplement brands develop different products and SKUs.
So I suggested something simple:
If the brand could produce several supplement label designs together, the packaging cost per SKU could come down.
For example, if five supplement label designs use the same:
  • label size
  • material
  • finishing
  • die-cut shape
  • similar production method
then many production steps can be arranged together.
That can reduce repeated setup work and repeated die-cutting preparation.
This is one of the reasons why supplement labels for multiple SKUs can sometimes be more economical when produced together.

Why This Works Especially Well for Small-Batch Supplement Labels

For small-batch production, setup costs have a much bigger effect on unit price.
If one SKU is produced alone, that SKU has to absorb the full setup cost.
If several compatible SKUs are produced together, those setup costs can be shared across more designs.
That can make small batch supplement labels much more cost-efficient.
For the brand, the total order value may increase slightly because more SKUs are being produced.
But compared with producing each SKU separately later, the overall packaging cost can be much better controlled.

It Can Also Help the Manufacturer Win More Business

There was another advantage.
If the supplement manufacturer could encourage the brand to launch several product variations at the same time, they could also increase the number of SKUs they produced for that brand.
So this was not only a label cost-saving idea.
It could also help the manufacturer increase the value of the overall project.
A few days later, we received an updated request.
The customer added several more designs for each label size and asked us to revise the pricing.
After we updated the quotation, the customer and the brand quickly confirmed the next steps.
The project moved forward.

Does Increasing Order Volume Always Reduce Label Costs?

Not automatically.
The key point is not simply ordering more labels.
The real question is:
Can several compatible label designs be produced together efficiently?
The cost-saving effect is usually better when the SKUs share similar specifications.
For example:
  • same label size
  • same material
  • same finishing
  • same die-cut shape
  • quantities that can be arranged efficiently
If every SKU uses a completely different material, size, or finishing method, the savings may be much smaller.
That is why it is helpful to let your label supplier review the entire SKU structure before production.

A Good Label Supplier Should Look Beyond the Order Quantity

Labels may be only a small part of the total product cost.
But during early-stage or small-batch production, even small packaging savings can help a project move forward.
A good supplier should not only ask:
“How many labels do you want to order?”
They should also ask:
  • How many SKUs do you have?
  • Can any designs share the same production setup?
  • Can several designs be printed together?
  • Is there a more economical production arrangement?
For custom supplement labels, this can be especially useful because supplement brands often have several product variations, strengths, flavors, or formulas.
